Facts

  • Chinese automaker Zeekr launched new EV batteries on Tuesday, that it claims can charge from 10% to 80% in 10.5 minutes using ultra-fast charging stations — faster than any of its competitors, including Tesla and BYD.[1]
  • Zeekr also claimed that the new battery could charge in 30 minutes at -10°C (14°F) temperatures. According to the US-listed company, the upcoming 2025 007 sedan will be the first vehicle model to use the new batteries.[2]
  • The company claims its lithium iron phosphate-based batteries — which it says are better than existing nickel-cobalt-manganese batteries — along with its V3 ultra-fast charging stacks enabled the new 007 sedan model to set a new charging speed record.[3]
  • Elon Musk's Tesla, on the other hand, asserts that its Model 3 can travel 175 miles (282 km) on a 15-minute charge, which is just under half of its overall range.[4]
  • Zeekr reportedly plans to expand its network of ultra-fast charging stations in China from 500 to 1K this year, and to operate over 10K ultra-fast charging stacks from the current 2.7K by 2026.[5]
  • Zeekr's parent company, Geely, owns multiple luxury sports car brands, including Volvo and Lotus. Zeekr's shares started trading on the New York Stock Exchange in May. However, they are currently trading 27% below the initial price.[6]

Narratives

  • Narrative A, as provided by Zeekrglobal. With the imminent launch of the new 007 sedan next week, Zeekr has addressed customer concerns about limited driving range by having its research and development team optimize materials and upgrade its technology to set a new benchmark for rapid charging.
  • Narrative B, as provided by InsideEVs. Due to its aggressive industrial policies, which funnel billions into electric vehicles, China has become the global leader in the EV industry. Global legacy manufacturers have legitimate reasons to be concerned because Zeekr will soon outperform its US and European competitors.
