Facts

  • On Thursday, the Republican-majority US House of Representatives voted 219-208 to refer to the House Homeland Security Committee and Judiciary Committee Rep. Lauren Boebert’s (R-Colo.) privileged resolution to impeach Pres. Biden.1
  • This vote postpones a full House impeachment vote, as the committees are not required to consider the resolution, which charges Biden with “high crimes and misdemeanors” over his US immigration policies at the Mexico border.2
  • Boebert, who also attempted to impeach Biden in 2021, claimed in the six-page document that Biden was "purposefully and knowingly" allowing millions of migrants into the US without facing proper proceedings.3
  • Earlier in the week, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) had urged Republicans to oppose a full-blown impeachment resolution based on it jumping the gun on ongoing investigations the House is currently conducting of Biden.4
  • Meanwhile, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has stated her intentions to file a similar impeachment resolution against Biden, members of his cabinet, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and a US prosecutor working on cases against participants in the Jan. 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol.1
  • Republicans’ attempts to impeach Biden come after former Pres. Trump was impeached twice by Democrats — once over withholding military aid to Ukraine, and once on charges related to the Jan. 6 riots. He was acquitted both times by the Senate.2

Narratives

  • Republican narrative, as provided by Daily Wire. This is the best path forward for House Republicans to show they’re united in their efforts to hold Biden accountable for his misdeeds. The committees were already looking into Biden’s failed border policies, and this resolution should help push those probes forward.
  • Democratic narrative, as provided by MSNBC. Boebert and her far-right allies are bringing forward these baseless impeachment resolutions to increase the notoriety of their personal brands and support their own fundraising. Perhaps they could be taken more seriously if they’d shown the slightest regret for Trump’s actions, but alas, this is just a partisan game to them.
  • Narrative C, as provided by FOX News. Impeaching Biden would be a worthwhile venture if Republicans already had ironclad evidence, but unfortunately, investigations are ongoing. Republicans should instead focus on delivering for the American people before they eventually take down Biden.
