Facts

  • According to The Associated Press (AP), former Pres. Donald Trump will return to the White House as the 47th US president after winning Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes at 5:34 a.m. EST Wednesday.[1][2]
  • With the victory in Wisconsin, Trump has cleared the threshold of 270 electoral votes needed to return to power. According to AP, 277 Electoral College votes have been called for Trump, compared to Kamala Harris' 224.[3][4]
  • This comes as Fox and the Hill had called the election for Trump earlier in the day, with the former president declaring victory on stage in West Palm Beach in the early hours of Wednesday, after winning Pennsylvania. In his victory speech he said: "This was a movement like nobody's ever seen before, and frankly, this was, I believe, the greatest political movement of all time."[2][5][6][7]
  • The vote count is still underway, but according to AP, the popular vote percentage is currently at around 51% for Trump to 47.5% for Harris. Trump has secured over 71.7M votes, while Harris has secured at least 66.9M.[8]
  • Harris is expected to concede in a national address later on Wednesday. "We still have votes to count. We still have states that have not been called yet," her campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond stated.[9][10]
  • With Tuesday's win, Trump becomes only the second person in American history (after Grover Cleveland) to achieve non-consecutive presidential terms, the first convicted of a felony to be elected president, and the oldest person ever elected to the office.[3][7]

Narratives

  • Republican narrative, as provided by New York Post. Donald Trump has endured partisan lawfare and unfair persecution since leaving office in 2021, and today’s result is a resounding victory for the American people. This is a mandate for strong borders, a robust economy, an America First approach to foreign policy, and a rejection of failed left-leaning policies. The new Trump administration will pursue bold visions to Make America Great Again.
  • Democratic narrative, as provided by CNN. The Democratic Party is committed to the peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Trump. This was a hard-fought effort by the Harris campaign, and the Democratic Party believes in checks, balances, and the strength of institutions. The American people must rest assured that their voices will be heard in the months ahead, even though this is a disappointing result for many. Now is not the time for despair; the fight for social progress will continue well into the future.
