Facts

  • On Tuesday, the UN’s World Meteorological Organization issued a 'red alert' on global warming, in the State of the Global Climate report, and said that it is highly likely that 2024 will experience record-breaking heat.1
  • The Geneva-based organization made its declaration after analyzing data that showed an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, increases in sea and land temperatures, and the continued melting of sea ice and glaciers while efforts to reduce the impacts remain inadequate.2
  • The warning comes after March 2023-February 2024 eclipsed the 1.5°C threshold established by the Paris Climate Agreement.3
  • The authors cited that the current warming trend has increased the number of disasters like heatwaves, flooding, droughts, and wildfires. These events have led to 'misery and mayhem, upending everyday life for millions and inflicting many billions of dollars in economic losses.'4
  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the impacts of climate change are the Earth’s way of 'issuing a distress call.' This comes as the amount of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, the three main greenhouse gasses, reached new levels in 2022 and 2023.5
  • The WMO did tout an increase in renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydropower as a step towards reducing emissions. Since 2022, renewable energy capacity generation has increased by almost 50%.6

Narratives

  • Narrative A, as provided by Spectator (UK). The UN is a world leader and strategist of climate alarmism. The body has made terrifying the public a performative art form. What UN agencies have failed to realize is that putting the fear of misery and death into people doesn't spur action. If the UN truly wants to garner support and deliver it will need to dial down the extremist language and provide factual, relevant, and digestible goals and paths forward.
  • Narrative B, as provided by The Arizona Republic. There have been warnings for decades about how badly a changing climate could impact our way of life. Big Oil has known for years but instead of taking responsibility and acting, they embarked on marketing adventures and misinformation campaigns to boost their bottom line. If the investments in renewable energy sources were as coordinated and effective the change in the planet's sustainability would be remarkable.
