Facts

  • On Sunday, the Ukrainian Air Force claimed that it had successfully shot down 52 of the 54 Iranian-made "Shahed-136/131" drones. Russia reportedly targeted these drones to attack Kyiv on the night of May 27.1
  • Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the largest drone attack directed at the capital since the start of the war caused a fire in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district, leaving one person dead and another hospitalized.2
  • The pre-dawn assault coincided with Kyiv Day, the capital's anniversary of its official founding 1,541 years ago. The air raid sirens reportedly lasted more than five hours3
  • Meanwhile, Russia's authorities claimed its air defense systems destroyed several drones moving towards the Ilsky Oil Refinery in the Krasnodar Krai region [near the Black Sea]. On Saturday, two kamikaze drones attacked an oil refinery in Russia's Tver Oblast, damaging its infrastructure.4
  • Elsewhere, on Border Guard Day holiday, Russian Pres. Putin ordered more robust border security to facilitate "fast" Russian military and civilian movement into Moscow-controlled Ukrainian regions and "reliably cover" the lines near the combat zone.5
  • In other news, Vasily Malyuk, head of Ukraine's Security Service, seemingly acknowledged Ukraine's role in damaging the Crimean Bridge in Oct. 2022, an incident Moscow described as a "terrorist act," saying the logistics route was "cut off" per "international law and the customs and traditions of warfare."6

Narratives

  • Pro-Ukraine narrative, as provided by BBC News. The history of Ukraine is a longstanding irritant for the Kremlin, which is why it's not surprising that the largest drone attack on Kyiv since the start of Russia's invasion came on the last Sunday of May when Ukraine's capital was preparing to celebrate its founding day. The attacks, which also come ahead of a widely expected Ukrainian counter-offensive, show that Putin is hellbent on escalating the war — which may get a new dimension neither sides need nor want.
  • Pro-Russia narrative, as provided by RT. Despite the spin and characterization by Ukraine on the scale and intent of the drone attack by Moscow, the truth is that Russia is over 15 times larger than Ukraine and has tremendous resources. The Kremlin hasn't started to ramp up seriously in Ukraine just yet, and officials in Kyiv and their Western enablers must keep this in mind as their provocations continue.
