Facts

  • The UK government is set to introduce new plans to reduce anti-social behavior, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stating that he hopes the new measures will 'crack down' on social issues — such as graffiti and vandalism — 'once and for all.'1
  • The plans were first detailed on Saturday, with England and Wales creating 26 areas that will receive funding to trial policies such as 'hotspot' enforcement patrols and an 'immediate justice' scheme. If successful, these measures would be implemented throughout all of England and Wales starting in 2024.2
  • The 'immediate and visible' punishments for those found breaking the law include vandals cleaning up their own public damage within 48 hours while wearing high-visibility jackets or jumpsuits. Further punishments and increased fines are also expected, as well as enhanced drug testing for individuals arrested and action against so-called 'drunken louts.'3
  • The sale of nitrous oxide, known colloquially as 'laughing gas', will also be banned publicly — as revealed by leveling up secretary Michael Gove. This is despite the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs warnings that the move would be disproportionate to the drug's harm level and would create 'significant burdens' for its legitimate use.4
  • The plan will also make the creation of organized begging networks by criminal gangs an offense. Sunak commented that anti-social behavior undermined the 'basic right of people to feel safe in the place they call home.'5
  • Sunak was expected to speak further on these policies on Monday. The Labour Party has accused the government of stealing its ideas, with party leader Sir Keir Starmer unveiling his own crackdown on antisocial behavior earlier this month.6

Narratives

  • Right narrative, as provided by The telegraph. Reducing anti-social behavior is a laudable ambition that is shared by all law-abiding citizens. While the likes of Tony Blair have certainly failed before, Sunak is building a reputation as a man who diligently applies himself to ensure he achieves what he wants. If these policy issues can be tackled, there will be many in the UK grateful to the Prime Minister.
  • Left narrative, as provided by Mirror. So-called 'anti-social behavior' has been allowed to thrive thanks to neighborhood police forces being decimated. The policies by Sunak and his party are simply empty rhetoric — the police have dwindled in the last 13 years, no matter what has been promised under Tory guidance. This is a cruel approach to addressing complex social issues.
