Texas Shooting Suspect Captured

A days-long manhunt for a gunman who fatally shot five neighbors, including a nine-year-old boy, in Texas ended Tuesday evening, with authorities announcing they had arrested the suspect, Francisco Oropesa.¹
Oropesa was captured near the town of Cut and Shoot, several miles from where the shootings took place, after a member of the public contacted the FBI's tip line. His wife, Divimara Lamar Nava, was also detained for allegedly helping him evade capture.²
The arrest ends what had become a widening search that had grown to more than 250 people from multiple jurisdictions, with a collective award of $80K.³
On Wednesday, San Jacinto County Judge Randy Ellisor ordered the suspect to be held on a $7.5M bond, $1.5M each for five counts of murder. In addition to his wife, several others have also reportedly been arrested, although their identities haven't been released.⁴
The victims are Daniel Enrique Laso, 9; Sonia Argentina Guzman, 25; Diana Velázquez Alvarado, 21; Julisa Molina Rivera, 31; and José Jonathan Cásarez, 18. They are all believed to have been from Honduras.⁵
After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott faced criticism for describing the shooter and victims as “illegal immigrants," a spokesman clarified, saying that federal authorities had informed them that they "were in the country illegally" but that they have since learned at least one of the victims may have entered legally.⁶

Somehow an illegal immigrant was able to get access to a gun and brutally massacre five people, including a child. Every possible angle of this tragic case should be scrutinized.
