Texas Governor Activates 'Tactical Border Force'

Facts

  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday the state will deploy a new "Texas Tactical Border Force"' ahead of the looming expiration of the Title 42 public health order in response to what he deemed Pres. Joe Biden’s “reckless border policies.”1
  • The Texas Military Department said the additional 545 National Guardsmen "will bolster the thousands of Texas National Guard service members already assisting local and state law enforcement" to "stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas."2
  • Abbott said the new border force is made up of an "elite National Guard” specifically trained for identifying where illegal immigrants are trying to cross the border and to “repel them.”3
  • The new unit will deploy to areas along the Rio Grande where there are increases in illegal activity such as drug, weapons, and human smuggling.4
  • This comes as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) expects more than 10K migrants to cross the border per day once Title 42, a COVID-era health policy under which the federal government can immediately expel migrants who cross the border, ends Thursday. Biden has also ordered an additional 1.5K military personnel to the border.5

Narratives

  • Democratic narrative, as provided by Atlantic. No active military members should ever be deployed to deal with immigration issues. The military is not supposed to fight on American soil, and under past administrations, including those of Trump and Obama, soldiers were left sitting around doing nothing when sent to the border. Abbott’s actions are illegal and unethical.
  • Republican narrative, as provided by Daily Mail. Millions of illegal immigrants could begin spilling over the border as soon as Title 42 ends, and Abbott must use every tool at his disposal to deter them. If the Biden administration won’t do its job, then states need to step up and defend America's borders from this invasion.
