Some Republicans in Talks With Democrats to Pick House Speaker

Facts

  • According to an anonymous Republican representative speaking with CBS News, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) still needs 'at least 10 to 20' Republican votes to become the next House speaker.1
  • While House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) suggested that some Republicans are working to 'change the rules to facilitate bipartisanship,' Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) said that voting for a Democrat 'would be political suicide, even for the most moderate of members.'2
  • After Scalise dropped out of the race, Jordan was nominated Friday after defeating Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga.) during a closed-door internal party vote of 124-81. After he was nominated, he received 152 votes in favor to 55 against in another secret ballot, still far from the 217 he needed to become speaker.3
  • Some allies of Donald Trump have said Jordan made a mistake by not bringing a vote to the House floor last week to expose those voting against him. Allies of Jordan say he's kept the votes secret to give him more time to meet with members.1
  • After previously saying he would only call a floor vote if he knew he had the necessary 217 votes, Jordan said Monday that he would force a vote on Tuesday at noon.4
  • As of Tuesday morning, six Republicans have come out against Jordan, while three more are leaning against voting for him. Jordan told CNN Tuesday that he feels 'really good' while stressing the importance of selecting a speaker today.5

Narratives

  • Democratic narrative, as provided by Bloomberg. While times have certainly changed, and a far-right man like Jim Jordan can gain popularity within the online conservative media sphere, that doesn't mean he's fit for the job. What Jordan is good at is holding a conspiratorial House Oversight Committee hearing and pushing such theories to viewers on TV. However, the job of the speaker is still to bring the two parties together and actually pass legislation — and Jordan has no experience doing this.
  • Republican narrative, as provided by National Review. It does seem that Jordan will obtain the necessary votes to become speaker, but that doesn't mean he's going to bring the party together. As shown by most Republicans not attending a meeting last week to discuss the vote, the Republican party is becoming increasingly fractured and is showing no signs of coming back together. The lawmakers who are celebrating this chaos have no desire to actually govern.
  • Conservative narrative, as provided by The Hill. Jim Jordan has proven time and time again his commitment to fighting for actual conservative beliefs. He fought back against Joe Biden's additional 87K IRS agents, exposed the Justice Department's political weaponization, and helped pass the most successful border security legislation in American history. Jordan listens to and acts upon what the public truly wants, which is why he is the best candidate for the speakership.
