Right-Wing Israelis Storm Military Bases After Alleged Prisoner Abuse
Facts
- Right-wing activists and politicians stormed the Sde Teiman military base in southern Israel on Monday, following the arrest of nine reservists serving there over allegations of 'serious' prisoner abuse at the facility.[1]
- Hours later, protesters gathered outside and eventually broke into the Beit Lid base in central Israel, where the suspects were being questioned. The situation has already been brought under control in both bases.[1]
- This comes as Israeli media reported that 10 soldiers at Sde Teiman sexually abused a Palestinian prisoner from Gaza to the point that he was taken to a hospital with severe injuries to an intimate body part, leaving him unable to walk.[2]
- The military police did not give details regarding the allegations. Multiple reports have been released alleging widespread abuse and torture of Palestinian prisoners at Sde Teiman, which has been used for detaining Palestinians from Gaza.[3]
- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 'strongly' denounced the break-in, but did not comment on the abuse allegations, while Pres. Isaac Herzog called for calm.[4]
- Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and military chief Herzi Halevi also denounced the protests, with the latter claiming that investigations would preserve the military's values and protect Israeli soldiers. In contrast, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that the detained soldiers should be treated like heroes, not criminals.[5]

Narratives
- Pro-Israel narrative, as provided by Jerusalem Post. Though the feelings of the protesters are certainly understandable given the horrors Hamas terrorists unleashed on Israel during its Oct. 7 attack, this anarchy will only weaken Israel domestically and internationally. Attacks on the military are simply unacceptable when Israel is facing so many existential threats, and the allegations of abuse must be taken seriously if Israel is to maintain its moral high ground.
- Pro-Palestine narrative, as provided by Middle East Eye. The reports of torture and rape at Sde Teiman, among other Israeli detention facilities, are overwhelming. Though Israel may treat these brutal acts as individual incidents, they are part of a wider systematic campaign to torment the Palestinian people. Israeli ministers in the ruling coalition openly encourage the abuse of prisoners, yet the world does nothing.
