Report: UN Warns Climate Plans 'Nowhere Near' 1.5C Goal

• A new report by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change published on Wednesday has said that world governments' plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions aren't enough to avoid exceeding the 1.5C global warming goal. Current measures have the world on track to reach between 2.1 and 2.9C of warming, in comparison to pre-industrial times, by the end of the century.¹
• Over the last year, only a handful of governments have committed to substantially strengthening their plans, despite pledges made during COP26 in Glasgow last November.²
• The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change executive secretary Simon Stiell said that current plans don't 'go far enough, fast enough... National governments must set new goals now and implement them in the next eight years.'²
• According to climate experts, in comparison to 2010 levels, emissions need to be reduced by 43% by 2030 in order to reach the goals of the Paris deal. The UN's report argues that current world government plans will actually lead to an increase in emissions by 10.6% by 2030.³
• With the world already feeling the impacts of extreme weather at 1.2C, UN chief Antonio Guterres said that the 1.5C goal is still achievable, though the current trajectory of the existing plans is 'catastrophic.'⁴
• The report was released just two weeks ahead of climate talks set to take place in Sharm el-Sheikh. Guterres said COP27 'must be the place of clarity on vital funding for adaptation and resilience.' He went on to say that the convention, 'must be the place for serious action on loss and damage.'³
