Facts

  • Of the 99 journalists killed globally in 2023, 77 — including 72 Palestinians — died reporting on the Israel-Hamas war, according to a report published by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Thursday.1
  • The 2023 total is reportedly the highest figure since 2015 and 44% more than the number of media personnel killed in 2022.2
  • The New York-based NGO found that the war in Gaza is primarily responsible for the rise in the reporters' killings in action, as the first three months following the Oct. 7 attacks had claimed more journalists than in any single country in an entire year.3
  • If the deaths in Gaza are excluded, the CPJ said the number of journalists killed in 2023 dropped considerably as compared to 2022, when 69 journalists lost their lives.4
  • Previously, the CPJ had documented that a total of 320 journalists had been jailed across the world as of Dec. 1, 2023 — the second-highest since the non-profit began documentation in 1992.5

Narratives

  • Pro-Israel narrative, as provided by POLITICO. A perceptible anti-Israel bias pervades the global NGO fraternity. Only Israel's 'war crimes' are highlighted and spoken about, even though all parties hold responsibility. Such cherry-picking during a war launched by Israel's enemies can only be called propaganda.
  • Anti-Israel narrative, as provided by Washington Post. The world, especially the West, rarely misses an opportunity to point to the lack of free speech in the Arab sheikhdoms. But rarely is Israel, a democracy, taken to task for its violations. What more do we need to conclude that Israel is carrying out a veritable massacre of journalists?
