Facts

  • According to Substack outlets Racket News and The Disinformation Chronicle, leaked internal documents from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) show 'kill Musk's Twitter' through 'advertising focus' tactics to be annual priorities for the UK organization within monthly agenda notes.[1][2]
  • Posting excerpts on X, co-author Paul Thacker alleges that the CCDH also held the goal of 'trigger[ing] EU and UK regulatory action' despite being a tax-exempt non-profit. The post has received over 30M views, and has been reposted by Elon Musk alongside the caption, 'This is war.'[3][4]
  • CCDH states that social media companies 'erode basic human rights and civil liberties' by 'enabling the spread of online hate and disinformation,' and pledges to hold platforms accountable. It has alleged misleading US election posts by Musk have been viewed over 1.2B times on X without correction.[5][6]
  • The report claims that CCDH Chief Executive Officer Imran Ahmed has refused to comment on the documents, and notes that the organization was founded by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's election campaign leader and current chief of staff Morgan McSweeney.[2]
  • This comes as US Republican candidate, former Pres. Donald Trump, has filed a complaint to the US Federal Electoral Commission for foreign interference as current and former UK Labour staff travel to the US to volunteer on behalf of the Harris campaign.[7]

Narratives

  • Right narrative, as provided by Spectator (UK) and Tabletmag. First Labour Party members flocking to America to campaign, and now a covert campaign by the Labour-affiliated CCDH to destroy a free-speech social media platform. In true hypocritical fashion, the autocratic left has been exposed for using the very same underhand tactics they have so often accused Trump and Russia of undertaking for nearly a decade. These developments are likely to only sway the US election even further in Trump's favor, with Starmer having a lot of explaining to do if the former President does indeed return to the White House.
  • Left narrative, as provided by Guardian and New Yorker. There's no doubt Musk's policies have transformed the platform once known as Twitter into a safe haven for hate, racism, misogyny, and disinformation. Under the superficial veil of freedom of speech, Musk and tech billionaires have turned X into a vehicle for dangerous right-wing ideology to thrive. Unless social media platforms are properly regulated and forced to take responsibility for the content they promote, it is best to leave X altogether and seek alternatives for the sake of a healthy society and democracy.
