Poland's Election: Donald Tusk Appeals to Female Voters
Facts
- Ahead of pivotal parliamentary elections, Polish opposition leader Donald Tusk has turned his attention to courting female voters who may be upset at the ruling Law and Justice (PIS) party over tightened abortion laws.1
- Poles will go to the polls Sunday to vote in a parliamentary election that will determine whether or not the populist PIS — in power for eight years — remains in control.2
- Meanwhile, Civic Platform is promising the country's female voters that if Tusk wins, he will subsidize in vitro fertilization — for which the PiS government stopped public financing in 2015.3
- Earlier this month, Tusk had said women's rights are 'absolutely key to this election,' claiming his loss in the polls would return Polish women to the 'Middle Ages.'1
- Abortion has been outlawed since 1993, and in 2020, Poland's Constitutional Tribunal removed fetal abnormalities as one of the exceptions to the law.4
- According to a recent report by the Warsaw-based think tank Stefan Batory Foundation, only 52% of women aged 18 to 45 are prepared to vote in the election — with only 27% of those who are knowing how they will vote — while 58% of men in the same age group will vote.1

Narratives
- Left narrative, as provided by Time. The Law and Justice party has created a regressive environment that seeks to curtail women's rights and place barbaric restrictions on abortion. PiS is doing nothing to help thousands of Polish women suffering after the country enacted a virtual ban on abortion. Now is the time for the country's women to take charge and make their voices heard.
- Right narrative, as provided by European Conservative. For the last eight years, the Law and Justice party has protected the country against the radical left, mass migration, and degradation of Poland's Catholic values. While the left may smear it, the truth is that the ruling party represents the vast majority of Poles, has common sense positions on women's rights, and will not stop fighting for Polish values.
