Pennsylvania Manhunt Continues for Murder Convict Danelo Cavalcante

Facts

  • Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan stated on Saturday that 34-year-old convicted murderer Danelo Cavalcante was spotted on a residential surveillance camera early that day in Pocopson Township, about 1.5 miles away from the Pennsylvania prison he fled on Thursday.1
  • The sighting reportedly occurred at roughly 12:30am in the 1800 block of Lenape Road, with DA Ryan adding that Cavalcante matches the description of a man that allegedly attempted to break into a home at 11:30pm in the 1000 block of the Ballintree Lane in Pocopson Township.2
  • Based on the footage, authorities have narrowed the search area in the manhunt. The escapee is believed to be hiding in a heavily wooded area near the prison that contains close to 300 homes — authorities have urged residents in the area to stay inside and keep their homes and belongings locked.3
  • The US Marshals Service, Pennsylvania State Police, and Chester County law enforcement will continue to search for the fugitive who was last seen wearing pants, a light-colored T-shirt and white sneakers on Sunday. Efforts have so far involved dogs, search choppers, and hundreds of officers.4
  • Cavalcante escaped from the prison in West Chester just a week after being sentenced to life in prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend Deborah Brandao to death in 2021. The incident reportedly occurred when she threatened to expose him to the police, after learning he was wanted for killing a man in his native Brazil in 2017.5
  • This isn't the first prison escape reported in Pennsylvania this year. A homicide suspect remained at large for over a week after fleeing the Warren County jail on July 6, two months after a pair of inmates who escaped the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center went on the run for several days.6

Narratives

  • Right narrative, as provided by The Daily Wire. All this mess, including the cold-blooded killing of Deborah Brandao in front of her two children, could have been prevented if the US had put serious measures in place to tackle illegal migration, as Cavalcante — who is also wanted in Brazil for murder — unlawfully crossed the border on a date that still remains to be determined.
  • Left narrative, as provided by The New York Times. While the manhunt for Cavalcante may reinforce a perception that illegal immigration leads to higher crime rates, the fact is that there's no evidence undocumented populations have had any effect on violent crime trends. This dangerous criminal is an exception among individuals who typically come to America to find work and support the US economy.
