Pelosi’s Husband Attacked in Home Invasion

Facts

• Paul Pelosi, the 82-year-old husband of Democratic US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, was attacked in the couple’s San Francisco, Calif. home by a hammer-wielding man on Friday, according to the police. He was rushed to the hospital.
• Nancy Pelosi was in Washington, DC at the time, her office confirmed. Her husband is expected to make a full recovery.
• San Francisco Police Chief William Scott said that 42-year-old David DePape was arrested at the scene and will be charged with several crimes, including attempted homicide and assault with a deadly weapon.
• Although no motive for the attack has been officially announced, CNN reported that DePape tried to tie up Paul Pelosi “until Nancy got home” and told police he was “waiting for Nancy” when they arrived at the scene. DePape had also posted controversial memes on Facebook on topics including COVID, the 2020 election, and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
• The attack inspired an outpouring of get-well wishes for the Pelosis and condemnation from both sides of the political aisle. Pres. Biden, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), and House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) all issued similar messages.
• Nancy Pelosi's spokesperson stated, “The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.” House members are currently off during a district work period.
