Nearly 300K Onewheel Skateboards Recalled

Facts

  • Onewheel electric skateboard manufacturer Future Motion Inc. has recalled nearly 300K products in tandem with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) after the boards were involved in numerous accidents and at least four deaths.1
  • The CPSC’s statement said that the four deaths happened between 2019 and 2021 as a result of head trauma. CPSC also detailed a history of brain injuries, concussions, paralysis, fractures, and ligament damage related to the skateboards.2
  • The recall applies to the Onewheel (original), Onewheel+, Onewheel+ XR, Onewheel Pint, Onewheel Pint X, and Onewheel GT.3
  • Future Motion urged people still using these models to update their app to enable the “haptic buzz” alter function, which lets riders know when the board is at its limits or is running out of power.3
  • Owners of models that aren’t eligible for a firmware update can seek a refund in store credit after getting rid of the board.4

Narratives

  • Narrative A, as provided by Electrek. There’s no telling how many accidents could have been avoided had Future Motion not rejected the CPSC’s demand for a recall last year. Recalls in the micro-mobility space are on the rise in line with an increase in usage, so it’s important that all manufacturers work closely with the CPSC to create the safest experience possible for future riders.
  • Narrative B, as provided by One Wheel. Future Motion has taken the necessary steps to assure that Onewheel skateboards are safe moving forward and that those who own existing models are compensated or have their boards updated. Future Motion has worked with the CPSC for months and will continue to do so.
