Facts

  • MI5 head Ken McCallum claimed that the intelligence service has 'one hell of a job on its hands' while speaking at an annual update on the security threats facing the UK on Tuesday.[1]
  • McCallum stated that UK police and MI5 had stopped 43 'late-stage [terrorist] attack plots' since March 2017, with MI5's counter-terrorism work split approximately 75%-25% between Islamist and right-wing terrorism, respectively. McCallum also warned of a returning threat from both the Islamic State and al-Qaeda.[2]
  • According to the MI5 head, the number of state threat investigations has risen by 48% over the past year. Iran is alleged to have conducted at least 20 'plots presenting potentially lethal threats' since January 2022, while Russia was accused of 'a sustained mission to generate mayhem' in the UK and Europe.[3][4]
  • A 'great majority' of over 750 Russian diplomats expelled from Europe since the country's invasion of Ukraine were claimed to be spies, while both Russia and Iran were accused of using criminal proxies to undertake activities such as sabotage and arson.[5]
  • Despite claiming MI5's approach to China was 'unaltered,' McCallum noted that the UK-China relationship was 'different' to the likes of Iran and Russia as economic agreements between the two 'supports UK growth, which underpins [UK] security.'[6][2]
  • According to MI5, the UK's terrorism threat remains 'substantial,' the third of five levels (low, moderate, substantial, severe, and critical), meaning that an attack on the UK is 'likely.'[7]

Narratives

  • Pro-establishment narrative, as provided by The Telegraph and The Mirror. Malicious state actors such as Russia and Islamist terrorist organizations continue to undermine the rule of law and attempt to do the UK considerable harm. Despite this, the UK remains steadfast in the defense of its sovereign interests and will remain vigilant in ensuring domestic security within an increasingly dangerous world.
  • Establishment-critical narrative, as provided by MFA and Sputnik International. Accusations of hostile operations by the likes of Russia and Iran are baseless and fictitious. The West continues to spread unfounded claims and hypocritically engage in their own covert behavior, seeking to destroy all cultures and ideologies that do not conform to their world order in a desperate bid to save their dying hegemony.
