Marjorie Taylor Green Criticized Over 'National Divorce' Tweets
Facts
- US Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is facing backlash following a Monday tweet in which she stated that due to the 'sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are done,' and that she believes the US should 'separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government.'1
- In response, former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) told Greene that such a measure would violate the 'oath to support and defend the Constitution' that Greene swore when becoming a congresswoman.2
- Cheney's comments come as the former congresswoman has faced backlash from the GOP for serving on the Jan. 6 committee investigating former Pres. Trump. Greene is a staunch ally of Trump, even reportedly eyeing serving as the former president's running mate in 2024.3
- Greene also took heat from the Democratic Party, with Kurt Bardella stating, 'this is a member of the House Homeland Security Committee advocating for Civil War.'4
- Her statements echo similar statements she had previously made on Twitter chiming in on discussions regarding 'transplants' not being allowed to vote in red or blue states.3
- During those previous statements, Greene said that Democratic Party supporters were able to 'ruin' California and therefore shouldn't be allowed to do the same in Florida.2

Narratives
- Republican narrative, as provided by PJ Media. This isn't the treasonous act some are portraying it to be, but it is more evidence that Marjorie Taylor Greene could use a break from social media. The congresswoman's bombastic Tweet, though amusing, is implausible given the geography of the US. The liberal elites are on opposite coasts, and even within the midwestern and southern states, there are dark blue cities and dark red outskirts. Greene should log out of Twitter for a while and focus on legislating rather than map drawing.
- Democratic narrative, as provided by Huffington Post. Marjorie Taylor Greene represents a radical faction of the GOP that is growing quicker than one might imagine. Though an actual national divorce is implausible, the sentiment behind it is very real, very dangerous, and can spread like wildfire within the far-right political sphere. The last time members of congress from Georgia wanted a 'national divorce,' the US lost 600K lives in the Civil War.
- Libertarian narrative, as provided by Townhall. Though no one quite knows how it would be accomplished, there is nothing wrong with contemplating the idea of a national divorce. When Trump was in office it was the left talking about California and New York seceding, and now with Biden as president, it's the other way around. The US was created to be a union and even expanded under that shared unity, but today is a different story. It would not necessarily be a bad thing if someone found a way to divorce peacefully. This is simply about freedom and self-determination.
