Facts

  • On Monday, the “Global Registry of Fossil Fuels” — the world’s first public database for tracking oil production, oil and gas reserves, and emissions — launched. It was developed by the organizations Carbon Tracker and Global Energy Monitor.
  • The registry includes data from more than 50k petroleum fields in 89 countries, covers about 75% of global reserves, production, and emissions, and is available for public use.
  • This new database makes previously hard-to-find data publicly more accessible, with a focus on tracking what petroleum reserves have yet to be burned.
  • The release of the database aligns with two high-profile climate meetings — the UN General Assembly in NY which began last week, and the November COP27 meetings in Egypt.
  • The database developers hope the platform can support environmental activists to pressure oil producers and governments in slashing emissions.

Narratives

  • Narrative A, as provided by DW. The world is in dire need of an immediate reduction in carbon emissions. This database is a vital tool for environmental groups and citizens to apply pressure on both governments and corporations. This platform provides transparency to help make systemic changes happen.
  • Narrative B, as provided by WSJ. Renewables and fossil fuel reductions are important, but the world isn’t ready yet. Nations are trying to pivot to green energy, but weather and COVID surged demand, and fossil fuels must now make up for what renewables can’t deliver. No matter what that data shows, we are still deeply dependent on non-renewable energy.
