Facts

  • Iran fired approximately 180 ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday with numerous impacts being reported. Initial reports indicate that two people were injured in the attack. The Israeli military called on citizens to shelter in bunkers during the attack.[1][2]
  • The Israeli military said that it intercepted 'a large number' of the missiles. The military's spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, said that Israel 'will also continue to strike powerfully in the Middle East, as has been the case for the past year.'[1]
  • Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the attack was retaliation for the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoushan, who was killed alongside Nasrallah. It warned Israel not to retaliate.[3]
  • The US had warned earlier on Tuesday that Iran was planning to fire ballistic missiles at Israel, adding that the US was actively supporting preparations to defend Israel and such an attack would 'carry severe consequences for Iran.'[4]
  • The US on Monday said it was sending additional troops to the Middle East due to rising tensions. One official said around 2K-3K troops will be sent to bolster the already 40K troops in the region. Additional air assets are also expected to be deployed.[5]
  • In April, Iran fired more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel in response to a strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria that killed several top commanders, though almost all of the drones and missiles were shot down by Israel, the US, and other Western allies.[6]

Narratives

  • Pro-establishment narrative, as provided by NBC. Iran's attack on Israel was an unprecedented escalation that will only make it harder to secure peace in the region. The US successfully worked with Israel and other allies to limit the attack's destruction. There will be consequences for attacking an American ally.
  • Pro-Israel narrative, as provided by Jerusalem Post. Iran's attack against Israel was a declaration of war. For almost a year, Israel has been under constant attack from Iran and its proxies. It has remained patient, but now things have changed. Though a direct response may not be immediate, Israel will have to hit Iran hard to deter any further aggression.
  • Pro-Iran narrative, as provided by PressTV. Iran simply cannot stand idly by while Israel commits genocide in Gaza and prepares to do the same in Lebanon. This successful attack was precise and targeted Israeli military installations. Indeed, Israel should think wisely about its next moves and not escalate the situation any further.
