Hungarian Whistleblower Sparks Protest Over Corruption

Facts

• Peter Magyar, the ex-husband of former Hungarian Justice Minster Judit Varga, has leaked an alleged Jan. 2023 recording of his former partner in which she admits that aides to cabinet chief Antal Rogan attempted to interfere in corruption prosecution.¹
• The prosecution in question involves former Justice Ministry State Secretary Pal Volner, who is accused of accepting bribes from the head of the Court Bailiffs. Prosecutors said they will analyze the audio, adding that it's 'legally and physically impossible' to make documents disappear or have them altered.²
• In a Facebook post, Varga confirmed it was her voice in the recording, however the former minister alleged she 'said what [Magyar] wanted to hear so I could get away,' claiming she had been enduring domestic violence at the hands of her ex-husband.³
• Following the audio's release, during an address Magyar made to a crowd of protesters, he called for the resignation of the Hungarian government, along with Chief Prosecutor Peter Polt, and an independent investigation into the events mentioned within the recording.⁴
• This follows protests last month over news that former pres. Katalin Novák pardoned a man convicted of covering up the sexual abuse of children at a state-run orphanage, as well as Magyar's announcement earlier this month of intentions to form a pro-EU party to challenge PM Victor Orbán's Fidesz.¹
