Facts

  • Hamas named Yahya Sinwar as the new head of the group's political bureau on Tuesday after the killing of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. Israel has accused Sinwar of being the “mastermind” of Hamas' Oct. 7 attack.[1]
  • Sinwar is one of several men Israel believes orchestrated the attack, including the leader of Hamas' military wing, Mohammed Deif, who Israel said it killed last month. Hamas didn't confirm his death.[2]
  • Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said that “there is only one place for Yahya Sinwar, and it is beside Mohammed Deif.' Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdan said that Sinwar’s selection was a sign the group will not be broken and 'remains steadfast in the battlefield and in politics.'[3]
  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sinwar has been and will continue to be a key figure in cease-fire negotiations, which have again stalled. Sinwar, who was born in a refugee camp in Khan Younis, has been the group's leader inside Gaza since 2017.[3][4]
  • National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said that Israel and Hamas are closer to a deal than ever. However, Israeli and Arab officials have said that talks have been stalled since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu added a series of new demands in July.[5]
  • In Gaza, the fighting continued, with Israel issuing evacuation orders for Beit Hanoun near Gaza City after the military said Hamas had fired rockets into Israel from the area. Beit Hanoun was one of the first targets of Israel's ground campaign in Gaza.[6]

Narratives

  • Pro-Israel narrative, as provided by Jerusalem Post. Hamas is now being run by a butcher who believes that he is engaged in a messianic struggle to bring about judgment day. Though some may claim that Hamas and men like Sinwar have political goals, the reality is they are led by an extremist ideology that seeks the complete destruction of Israel.
  • Pro-Palestine narrative, as provided by AL. Israel's recent spree of assassinations only provides further evidence that it is simply not interested in a cease-fire or ending the war. Sinwar's appointment ultimately changes very little, as the group has proved capable of adapting to challenges and its structure allows for dynamic leadership. Israel has continued to demonstrate that it only seeks to escalate tensions and prevent peace.
