Facts

  • Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination this year, released all her delegates and encouraged them to vote for former Pres. Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee, on Tuesday.1
  • With the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee coming up on July 15, Haley called the convention a time for party 'unity' and explained that she believes 'Joe Biden is not competent to serve a second term, and Kamala Harris would be a disaster for America.'2
  • Haley, who served as US ambassador to the UN under Trump and was the last candidate left to challenge him in the primaries when she suspended her campaign on March 6, also called for a 'president who will hold our enemies to account, secure our border, cut our debt, and get our economy back on track.'3
  • In May, Haley announced she would vote for Trump. Her 97 delegates would be added to Trump's existing total of 1,215 if they shift their allegiance to the former president.4
  • Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Haley confirmed she will not attend the convention because she was not invited. Another Trump primary rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, will be there but reportedly won't be granted a speaking slot.5

Narratives

  • Republican narrative, as provided by One America. It's great to see that despite all the acrimony that arose during the primary race, and the fact that Trump hasn't invited Haley to the Republican convention, Haley is making this gesture in the name of party unity. The Biden campaign was attempting to lure Haley voters to its side, but this should empower her supporters to spurn the president and stick with the candidate that will better serve US interests — Trump.
  • Democratic narrative, as provided by The New Republic. This further solidifies the Republican Party as Trump's party, with little room left for moderates like Haley. Even after she suspended her campaign, she continued to pick up respectable percentages of the vote, but she's turning her back on her supporters and capitulating to a man who doesn't share her position on many policies and viciously attacked her personally during the primaries.
