GOP Ramps Up Congressional Investigations
Facts
- US House Republicans are set to advance several investigations and hearings this week, including a contempt vote against Attorney General Merrick Garland and a hearing on the Manhattan district attorney's (DA) office, which brought charges against former Pres. Donald Trump.1
- The House Judiciary Committee had Garland testify recently over his refusal to release the recording of Pres. Joe Biden's interview with special counsel Robert Hur regarding classified documents found at his home.2
- While a transcript of the interview is public, Republicans have pushed for the recording to be released against the objections of Garland and the White House.3
- In a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg agreed to appear in front of the committee after Trump's sentencing hearing in July. The GOP has alleged that the case was politically motivated.4
- The Thursday hearing date set by Jordan is set to pass without Bragg or prosecutor Matthew Colangelo, who the GOP alleges left a job at the Justice Department to pursue state-level charges against Trump.4
- On Tuesday, the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic held a closed-door hearing with former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo testifying about his handling of COVID, particularly in nursing homes.5

Narratives
- Democratic narrative, as provided by Washington Post. The GOP is making a mockery of the rule of law by using Republican-led committees to wage lawfare against their political opponents. These political committees are farces designed to frustrate and humiliate anyone who stands in the way of Trump and the GOP agenda. Each one of these allegations are all substance-free conspiracies.
- Republican narrative, as provided by New York Post. It's ironic to call the GOP hearings lawfare when the Democrat-led Justice Department is actually prosecuting its political opponents. Garland's Justice Department has shown itself to be the legal weapon of the Biden administration, examples of which range from trying to put Trump behind bars to prosecuting pro-life Americans for holding public prayer demonstrations.
