Facts

  • On Thursday, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez announced that he's running for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, a day after filing paperwork for his bid.1
  • The 45-year-old Cuban-American — the first Hispanic candidate to jump into GOP primary race this year — said he can draw new voters into the party with a "positive, inspirational, and aspirational candidacy."2
  • Suarez reportedly indicated that he would support a 15-week federal abortion ban with rare exceptions, such as rape and incest, and back reforms of immigration laws.3
  • Thursday's announcement comes after the SOS America PAC [Political Action Committee], an independent expenditure-only organization affiliated with Suarez, said it would spend $100K on digital ads in New Hampshire, Iowa, and Nevada.4
  • Suarez's presidential bid also comes amid an ongoing investigation into payments he allegedly received from real estate developer Rishi Kapoor to help with permitting issues hindering a $70M project in Coconut Grove.5
  • Suarez is the 10th challenger to former Pres. Trump and the third Florida-based GOP candidate to enter the US presidential race.6

Narratives

  • Narrative A, as provided by Slate. Standing out as the only Latino and big-city mayor running, as well as for having the most pluralistic ideology among Republican 2024 presidential candidates, Suarez is indeed a unique and intriguing challenger. However, as Miami's mayor, he has a largely ceremonial role. It will be very hard for him to gain any real traction behind Trump and DeSantis in the GOP, but he's an interesting and refreshing addition to the primaries.
  • Narrative B, as provided by New York Post. Suarez has no road ahead of him. By endorsing Democrats Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election and Andrew Gillum in the 2018 Florida gubernatorial election, he's proven that he's not a real Republican. His impact will likely be barely a footnote in the GOP primaries.
