Former Trump Lawyer Giuliani Disbarred in DC
Facts
- Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani was disbarred in Washington, DC, on Thursday over his claims of election fraud after the 2020 presidential election while working as a lawyer for the Trump campaign.[1]
- The DC Court of Appeals ruled that Giuliani, whose law license was previously suspended temporarily, should be disbarred because he was already disbarred in New York. It also cited his failure to explain 'why reciprocal discipline should not be imposed.'[2]
- This comes after the DC Board on Professional Responsibility in July recommended disbarment for Giuliani, whom the report said violated two legal ethics rules in suing to block the certification of Pres. Joe Biden's victory in Pennsylvania.[3]
- Last year, Giuliani's election fraud claims led a jury to award two former Georgia election workers $148M for defamation. He's also pleaded not guilty to nine felony charges in Arizona and faces separate election-related criminal charges in Georgia.[4]
- Giuliani is the latest Trump lawyer to face 2020 election denial consequences. Others include Kenneth Chesebro, who was charged with forgery in Wisconsin and took a plea deal in Georgia, and John Eastman, who was indicted in Georgia and Arizona.[5]

Narratives
- Pro-Trump narrative, as provided by New York Post. A great man and one of the most effective prosecutors in the history of the US is being taken down by politically motivated judges. Giuliani is being railroaded for doing his duty as Trump's lawyer to question the suspicious results of the 2020 election. If others don't speak out on Giuliani's behalf, the country's justice system could very well crumble.
- Anti-Trump narrative, as provided by Newsweek and The New Republic. Yet another person who worked for Trump has lost their legal career over their relationship with the election-denying former president. In Giuliani's case, his dishonor was so egregious that he faces both criminal charges and a whopping financial settlement. He deserves every penalty coming to him after choosing to prioritize Trump over American democracy and laws.
