Facts

  • On Sunday, at least five people were killed in a shooting at a condominium in the city of Vaughan, Canada, which is located just north of Toronto. A sixth person was reportedly in serious condition.
  • The suspect, who police confirmed was a 73-year-old male, was killed by police responding to an active shooter call. Constable Laura Nicolle said the shooting was the “most terrible call I’ve seen in my entire career.”
  • It has been reported that the shooting might have been motivated by a dispute with the condo board and multiple lawsuits filed by the suspect.
  • While the official motive has not been released, three of the five victims were reportedly members of the apartment's board of directors.
  • Public officials — including Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — issued statements sending their condolences to the victims and thanking the first responders.
  • The shooting comes as Canada is looking to ramp up its gun control measures. In October, Canada banned the sale, purchase, and transfer of handguns.

Narratives

  • Right narrative, as provided by Archive. This tragedy unfortunately will be used by Trudeau and left-leaning politicians to further erode the rights of Canadians to bear arms. Trudeau first said he wanted to just ban so-called “assault weapons,” but the scope is increasing. It's shameful that incidents like these are politicized to serve an agenda.
  • Left narrative, as provided by CTV. In the wake of a horrendous shooting, sadly conservatives are the ones politicizing the gun issue in Canada. The Trudeau administration is banning assault-style firearms, including AR-15s, which have no place in Canadian communities. Hunters and sport shooters will not be affected by these laws, which are designed to keep residents safe.
