Facts

  • American country music star Garth Brooks, 62, has been accused of raping a woman in a Los Angeles, Calif., hotel room in 2019 and allegedly repeatedly harassing her sexually from 2017-2020.[1][2]
  • Brooks is accused of booking only one room for him and the plaintiff to share during a trip to Los Angeles for his Grammy tribute performance when he allegedly assaulted her.[3]
  • The lawsuit, which was filed in a California court Thursday by an anonymous woman who claims to have worked as Brooks' makeup and hairstylist, also alleges other incidents of inappropriate conduct by Brooks including explicit text messages.[4]
  • According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff, identified under the pseudonym Jane Roe, claims to have worked for Brooks' wife, fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood, in 1999 before working for Brooks in 2017.[5]
  • The lawsuit against Brooks came after Brooks had filed what was, at the time, an anonymous lawsuit against a woman in Mississippi — accusing her of threatening to make the accusations if he didn't give her 'millions of dollars.'[6][5]
  • While Brooks has claimed that he's been 'hassled to no end with threats, lies, and tragic tales' for 'two months,' attorneys for Jane Roe argue that Brooks' 'filing of a preemptive complaint in Mississippi' were acts of 'desperation and attempted intimidation.'[6][5]

Narratives

  • Left narrative, as provided by Salon. While these are merely allegations that must be investigated further, if Garth Brooks is guilty of these claims, it means yet another powerful musician was able to use his fame and fortune to silence women. It's vital to bring attention to the social and financial disparities between the victims and powerful perpetrators in these unacceptably prevalent cases.
  • Right narrative, as provided by Youtube. It's true that Brooks is innocent until proven guilty, but the irony of this man facing such allegations should not be lost on anyone. Brooks built his brand on representing middle America while simultaneously attacking traditional American beliefs. His woke political beliefs can no longer save him from facing the consequences of this lawsuit.
  • Narrative C, as provided by Billboard. Brooks should be considered innocent until proven guilty. He has alleged an attempted extortion plot and judgment should be withheld until due legal process clarifies all aspects of this case.
