Facts

  • Following a 2-5 start to the 2022-23 NBA season, the Brooklyn Nets fired head coach Steve Nash in an announcement Tuesday morning, with assistant coach Jacque Vaughn serving as interim coach starting Tuesday night.
  • Nash, who went 94-69 during his more than two years with the team, will reportedly be replaced by suspended Celtics coach Ime Udoka, who shares the title of former San Antonio Spurs assistant coach with Nets General Manager Sean Marks.
  • In a statement, Marks said, "Since becoming head coach, Steve was faced with a number of unprecedented challenges," adding that "this was an immensely difficult decision."
  • Among the drama dealt to Nash was Nets star Kevin Durant's request for a trade over the summer — in which he cited Nash and Marks as reasons — as well as Kyrie Irving's controversies regarding his decision not to get the COVID vaccine and his retweeting of an anti-Semitic video.
  • Udoka, suspended by the Celtics for the entire 2022-23 season for "violations of team policies," will inherit both the on and off-the-court dilemmas in an attempt to bring the team back from its 44-38 outcome last year and poor start this season.
  • Nash, a former Phoenix Suns player, earned the titles of eight-time All-Star, two-time league MVP, and was later inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Narratives

  • Narrative A, as provided by Daily Caller. While Nash tried his best to take on one of the most bizarre team atmospheres imaginable, he shouldn't have to deal with the circus known as the Brooklyn Nets. He comes from a different generation — one in which you play through broken bones and big egos — and the players he was in charge of simply don't compare.
  • Narrative B, as provided by USA Today. Nash's firing was inevitable, though the timing is still mysteriously late. The Nets should've fired him after Durant first requested a trade over the summer, but they waited for the team to start the season at 2-5 and Nash to blow a fuse in a game against the Bucks. His coaching clearly wasn't working, and now the team is facing an uphill battle.
