Facts

  • Jeff Zink, a self-styled America First conservative, won the Republican nomination for the US House in Arizona's 3rd Congressional District in a two-way race on Tuesday.[1][2]
  • With 86% of the ballots counted, he secured 65.6% of the vote to defeat more moderate candidate Jesús David Mendoza, a 29-year-old political newcomer.[3][1]
  • This is the second time in a row that Zink will run for the seat in the most left-wing congressional district in the purple state, which includes parts of central, south, and west Phoenix and is predominantly Latino.[1][4]
  • He will face off with the winner of the three-way Democratic contest — former Phoenix City Council member Yassamin Ansari, former Arizona legislator Raquel Terán, and pediatrician Dr. Duane Wooten — to fill the seat of Rep. Ruben Gallego (D), who is running for US Senate against Republican candidate Kari Lake.[4][1]
  • With an estimated 86% of the ballots counted as of Wednesday evening, Ansani, an Iranian-American, had a 3-point lead, or 1,121 votes, over Terán, a Latina. Wooten is placed third with 11.1%.[5][4]
  • Zink took part in the Jan. 6, 2021, US Capitol protests along with his son, Ryan, but neither entered the building that day. While Jeff hasn't been charged, his son was convicted of three counts last September and faces up to 22 years in federal prison.[6]

Narratives

  • Pro-Trump narrative, as provided by The Gateway Pundit. That Zink has been chosen again to run for Arizona's heavily Democratic 3rd Congressional District is more than just a bold move. It's a strong message that adds to the victory of Kari Lake and many other conservative Republicans, showing that the Arizona GOP has gone MAGA.
